The collection consists of a regimental history, a morning report, and a roster for the second regiment of the First Kentucky Brigade. The regimental history list names of servicemen with remarks. The roster list names, date of entry into the regiment, date and cause of vacancy, and the names of their sucessors with the same information. The collection also includes a photograph of R.B. Willis taken at Camp Douglas. No date is given for the photograph. The collection ranges from 1861 to 1865.

The First Kentucky Brigade was part of the Confederate Army. it became known as the Orphan Brigade after Union troops captured Fort Donelson (1862), leaving the brigade cut off from it's home state for the duration of the war. Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety.
